Hendricks Square Hoop Earrings

Recycled glass earrings | beads made from a Hendricks Gin bottle, perfect for gin o'clock

I had so much fun doing the “Is this useful” series, and sharing where the recycled glass beads originated from. I think it’s fun to make those connections, and for people to maybe start wondering about glass and recycling a little bit more.

Today I made a pair of earrings from a Hendrick Gin bottle. I am heading “out on the town” with my husband tonight. These nights are fairly rare, and very precious! I feel like wearing these earrings as I sip on a Gin and Tonic at a trendy little bar in Adelaide!

Recycled glass earrings | beads made from a Cointreau bottle

I have quite a collection of bottles from people, and I don’t always get around to using them. Often these bottles take some time to clean, and then I have to smash them, so the process prior to making beads is a bit time consuming. I kind of like to have a reason to make beads from these bottles, so this week has been quite cool, as it has given me a reason to take some of these bottles and turn them into new pieces of jewellery.

I have had these Cointreau bottle beads ready for a few days, but I thought it needed a little something extra, so I made some beads from my favourite orange cup to add to the earrings. Love how these turned out!

Recycled glass beads | sometimes the colour disappears!

I’ve been having so much fun making beads from all of these new objects. I’ve been excited by the new colours of glass that have worked really well.

And then…well, let’s just say I had very high hopes for this beautiful gin bottle. I thought the colour was great, and it would mix well with some of the other gin bottle colours that I am using. But then I heated the glass, and all of that beautiful colour disappeared!

Recycled glass earrings | made from this beautiful cup

I was given this cup a while ago, and I loved the colour of it, but I hadn’t had a chance to use it until this week. This week seemed like a good time to test it out, and I’m glad that I did. The colour is really unique, and the beads that I made from it are lovely. I’m looking forward to making more beads from this glass and adding it into some of the jewellery pieces that I make with recycled glass beads.

Recycled glass earrings | handmade glass beads made from a sake bottle

I love that people are starting to look at their glass bottles before they throw them out. I am often asked “is this useful?”

This week I am sharing a bunch of items that I have been given, and the things that I am making with them.

This first item is a sake bottle that someone had thought about throwing away, but then they wondered if I could use it. I thought the colour might be a bit like Bombay Sapphire Gin, but it’s actually even more vibrant than that! I loved melting this glass and making some pretty little beads. The earrings are super cute!

Up early

Recycled glass earrings | pretty earrings made from a wine bottle

I do like to get up early. I feel like my brain resets to 100% over night, like a good night’s sleep recharges it fully! And as the day goes by, and I have interactions with all sorts of people, and work to do, my brain slowly, but surely loses it’s charge, until I’m running on about 20% by night time!

I know some people are night owls, and that is their time to shine. But for me it’s mornings. Always has been, always will be!

My most essential tool…

Recycled glass earrings | beads made from a Bombay Sapphire Gin bottle and an orange cup!

Is this pair of long tweezers!  These tweezers are used every single time I have to make a bead from recycled glass.

You see, I have to warm the glass up on a hotplate before I put it into the flame. Glass is a bit temperamental, it doesn’t like to heat up or cool down too quickly. Warming the glass on a hotplate allows me to introduce the glass to the flame when it’s warm, meaning it’s less likely to explode!

This pair of earrings features beads made from a Bombay Sapphire Gin bottle (and my favourite orange cup for contrast)! They are super long, and a more rounded version of this pair that I made the other day.

What is frit?

Recycled glass earrings | beads made from a wine bottle, decorated with red/pink frit

I get asked “what is frit” quite a lot. It’s really just smashed up glass that I can use in small amounts to add colour to some of the beads that I make from clear recycled glass bottles. It is commercially made, although it is possible to make it at home.  I quite like the blends that people are making, and I’ll often combine them to create my own little blend!

Anyway, in the photo below you’ll see a pair of earrings that I have made from a wine bottle, decorated with the frit that is on the right hand side of the photo. I don’t have to use very much to get some lovely colour into the beads.

I think this blend might be my new favourite!
